The Strength of the Church
What does it truly mean to be the church, and are we building something that can withstand the fire? This message takes us deep into the heart of that question, drawing on Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 3 about the materials we use to construct our spiritual lives and communities. Paul warns that fire will one day reveal the quality of everything we have built, and the sobering reality is that gold, silver, and precious stones survive the flame while wood, hay, and straw do not.
The challenge laid before us is to honestly examine what we are building and whether it is rooted in the genuine fire and presence of God or in the comfort and predictability of our own making.
There is a striking suggestion here that many communities of faith quietly resist the move of the Holy Spirit precisely because they sense, on some level, that what they have constructed would not survive that kind of heat.
For us, the invitation is the opposite: to step into the fire rather than away from it, trusting that what God refines is always more valuable than what we protect.
